Bringing Your Brand to Life — and Raising Your Profile Online

Branding Your Product or Service

• Start at the beginning. Your business plan should have a clear statement of how your product/service will be positioned in the market. If it is not yet ready, do it now. Identity your preferred market audience then strategize on how to reach it.
• Develop your logo. It will set the overall tone of your contact with that market – your identity.

Positioning Your Brand

Besides determining the market your product will appeal to, it is necessary to find your niche in that market. The tone of your branding – from logo to language – has to appeal to the tastes and values of that market segment.

Your Content – Concise or Clever?

In an effort to appear friendly and welcoming, many website owners will use copy that is a little too friendly, as if speaking with a friend who is "in the know." This approach can prove costly when you are dealing with search engines. If someone wants an apple, they usually search for... apples. So, if you call the apples you sell on your site Big Reds, search engines probably won't get it — and you won't be found.

Designing Your Website —Content is Key

The Words. Call it copy, call it content, just make sure your message is clear. State who your are; what you do; what you provide; features and benefits of your offering. Add to the user experience by including educational information that has value for the reader

The Pictures. Support your copy with images that bring your copy to life, help tell the story. Preferrably bright and inviting. Technically, make sure they are optimized for online viewing – proper sizing, alt tags, and title tags — you know, perfect.

SEO. And all that it entails. All your messaging should be focused on both the viewer and the search engines. This begins with keywords, of course.
